Emmerdale star Matthew Wolfenden rules out one exit story for David

Emmerdale spoilers follow.

Emmerdale star Matthew Wolfenden has ruled out one exit story for David Metcalfe.

The actor will be departing the ITV1 soap after 18 years on the show, and it's likely his character David will have a dramatic exit. Yet, fans don't have to worry about David leaving in a pine box.

Speaking to Metro, Matthew explained that Emmerdale bosses have promised that they won't kill off David so he has the opportunity to return someday.

"What I can say is I’m not dying, which is a good thing. I don’t die, so maybe David will come back in a few years," the actor said.

He did hint that there will be "tears and fights" before David goes, since he's unknowingly caught up in a love triangle involving his own son.

David has been desperately trying to win back former partner Victoria Sugden, completely unaware that his son Jacob has also professed his love for Victoria.

"That relationship with Jacob and Victoria is a huge reason why David eventually leaves the village," Matthew hinted.

During a recent appearance on This Morning, Matthew explained his Emmerdale departure by suggesting it was "the right time" to try something new.

"I met my wife [Charley Webb] on the show, we've had three kids," he said. "Not only has it given me 18 years of an amazing job, it's given me family. So to leave it, it's been a big, big part of my life."

The actor has already lined up a new job, as he'll be starring in a stage version of the classic holiday film ELF at the Dominion Theatre in London this December.

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
