Entries sought for new logo

Artists have until the end of the month to come up with a new logo design option for Thunder Bay's long-time Indigenous housing program. "We want to have a logo that is representative of Indigenous housing, as well our Indigenous tenants," Native People of Thunder Bay Development Corp. housing director Mitchell Argue said on Monday. The artist who designs the winning entry, to be decided by the agency's board, is to receive a $500 prize. "We would probably prefer an Indigenous artist, but we're open to everyone's ideas," said Argue, who added that some entries have already been submitted. The non-profit housing agency, which marked its 50th anniversary in the city last year, oversees about 250 housing units "to get our clients into safe, affordable housing," Argue said. Most of the units are single-family homes, but some are located in apartments. Since the agency was formed in 1973, "it now owns and provides administration for a total of 242 housing units throughout Thunder Bay, which includes an elders complex of 16, one-bedroom apartments," a backgrounder said. Argue said the development of a new logo is part of a "re-branding" exercise that is to include updating the agency's website and online social- media presence. According to the agency backgrounder, the majority of homes it manages "are between 30 and 100 years old, as many were purchased rather than built. As a result, "building maintenance and repair needs are significant." Available units are geared-to-income based on 25-30 per cent of a tenant's income, the backgrounder said. The deadline for submissions for the logo contest is April 30 at 4 p.m.
