Eric Stonestreet reveals favorite KC taco, Big Slick hopes, future of ‘Modern Family’

Eric Stonestreet used some free time during a flight over the weekend to chat with fans who got the former “Modern Family” star to talk about everything from his favorite Kansas City taco to the Chiefs, and Royals standout Bobby Witt Jr.

And … have we seen the last of Randy Reid, Stonestreet’s hilarious portrayal of Chiefs head coach Andy Reid’s fictitious younger brother?

“Do people still engage on this app in a fun and spirited way?” Stonestreet tweeted on his X account Saturday. “I’m on a plane (with WiFi) ((og’s will get that)) and would take a few questions. So……hit me up.”

The KCK native and K-State graduate co-starred as Cameron Tucker on ABC’s Emmy winning comedy “Modern Family,” which ended in 2020 after 11 seasons.

He recently co-hosted the annual Big Slick Celebrity Weekend with his fellow KC-connected celebrities Jason Sudeikis, Paul Rudd, Heidi Gardner and Rob Riggle. (David Koechner had to skip this year.)

This year’s event raised a record $3,973,637 for Children’s Mercy Hospital.

“Who would be your dream celebrity guest at big slick that hasn’t been there yet?” one fan wanted to know.

“I want buble’” Stonestreet said, naming pop singer Michael Buble.

“What causes your loyalty to Kansas City? I mean it’s been quite a while since you’ve lived here right? Sports is one thing but it seems like you still love this city like you still live here,” another fan wanted to know.

Stonestreet is actually the only Big Slick co-host who lives in the Kansas City area. In fact, several followers noted how much they enjoy seeing him at Chiefs games, at Kansas State football games or at Snack Shack in Johnson County.

He apparently sings to fellow motorists around town, too. “No questions, just wanted to drop in & say, having you sing “on the road again” to me from your pickup that evening in KC is a night I’ll never forget! #ThatWalmartDriver,” wrote one follower.

”The people man. Good people exist everywhere but I like to shine a light on my people,” gushed Stonestreet, a Piper High School grad who shared that his first job was working security at Sandstone in Bonner Springs, today known as Azura Amphitheater.

One fan asked if Stonestreet has “any new projects in the works?”

“Irons in the fire always,” he said.

Another told Stonestreet he named his son Cameron, soon to be 13, after the actor’s “Modern Family” character.

“Well that’s awesome and makes me feel old,” Stonestreet replied.

“Can we expect you this fall at Bill Snyder Family Stadium? Always love to see you with the drum line!” one K-State fan told him.

“I hope so!” Stonestreet replied

Here’s a sampling of more of his Q&A.

Don’t bother asking Eric Stonestreet, seen here with Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes at the Big Slick Party & Show on June 1, to compare Mahomes with Royals star Bobby Witt Jr. It was one of the questions fans asked during a Q&A online.

On pizza and tacos

“Favorite burger in KC? Mine is Walsh’s Corner Cocktail in Waldo, but I’m open to suggestions,” asked one fan.

Stonestreet said: “Town topic is pretty damn good.”

Another fan skipped the “obvious BBQ question because it’s just unfair” and got Stonestreet to name his favorite taco in Kansas City.

“Tacos el gallo on sw blvd is stellar,” he wrote, naming a Mexican restaurant at 806 Southwest Blvd. (there’s another location in Mission) that served its $3 tacos in heart-shaped boxes on Valentine’s Day.

Favorite burrito?

“Coach Reid and I agree. A chili relleno burrito,” he wrote, name-checking the popular mash-up of a traditional burrito and stuffed pepper.

Favorite Mexican food in Kansas City? Stonestreet was diplomatic.

“Man. Great question. We are known for bbq, but do not sleep on our Mexican. So many great places,” he said.

One fan asked where Stonestreet, a passionate fan of his alma mater’s teams, to name his favorite place to eat in Manhattan, Kansas.

He gave the phone number for Pizza Shuttle (which also has locations in the Crossroads and Lawrence).

About those Royals

Stonestreet had ended the Q&A by the time one fan asked him how he feels about the Chiefs and Royals possibly moving from Missouri to his side of the state line, Kansas.

“What is your role in keeping the Royals at the K?” one fan managed to ask before Stonestreet signed off.

“Hot dog eating,” Stonestreet snarked.

Fans acknowledged his fierce loyalty to local teams with several sports-related questions.

How good is Witt, one fan asked.

“Generationally good,” Stonestreet said.

Who’s the better athlete, Witt or Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes?

“Apples and oranges,” Stonestreet replied. “Both top in their sport and each would find success in both sports. They are where they are supposed to be.”

Say what about the Chiefs-Eagles?

Fans wanted to know if Randy Reid was available for training camp in St. Joseph this year. The Stonestreet character — Coach Reid’s brother who sells jet skis and drones in Oxnard, California — first showed up at Chiefs training camp in 2021.

Alas, it sounds like we might have seen the last of Randy.

“He’s retired and living off jet ski $$,” Stonestreet said.

He fielded quite a few Chiefs questions.

“Name your Favorite Chiefs player pre-2016!”

“Bro too many John Alt my all time fav. But way too many to name.”

“Best Chiefs or Royals sporting event you’ve ever seen live?”

“I mean, super bowl(s).”

“As a fellow Chiefs fan, I’m curious which Super Bowl victory has been your favorite (so far)?”

“Miami hard to beat man. I bawled.”

“Would you rather be forced to attend a Chiefs game wearing Raider gear or a K-State game wearing KU gear?”

“Wow. Great one, but the raiders gear.”

And when a Philadelphia Eagles fan named @amusedtodeath44 jabbed Stonestreet about the Chiefs winning last year’s Super Bowl, the exchange went like this.

“Do you think the Chiefs were gifted that Super Bowl against my Eagles, Eric?”

“Yes obviously. The nfl gifted us, you guys not scoring enough points to win.”

“That was a bogus penalty at the end. Thanks for responding. Love your work!”

“I agree (that) we have all been on the crap side of crap calls. That’s why you have to outplay the refs and score more points than you think you’ll need. You’ll be back.”

He also told a fan who said she is attending her first Chiefs game in November what to expect weather-wise: “Be prepared for sunny and 60 or sunny and 10.”

On ‘Modern Family’

Stonestreet won two Emmy Awards for supporting actor in a comedy series for playing Cameron, husband of Mitchell Pritchett (Jesse Tyler Ferguson).

Like Stonestreet himself, Cameron hailed from the Midwest (the fictional Tonganoxie, Missouri) and loved clowns. For both of them, their clown alter ego was Fizbo.

“Did you keep Fizbo clothes?” one fan asked Stonestreet, who replied with an enthusiastic “Yes!”

Stonestreet didn’t completely answer another fan who asked if there is a “chance for a Modern Family reunion and will you please guest judge on AGT again?”

Stonestreet’s fellow “Modern Family” co-star Sophia Vergara is a judge on “America’s Got Talent.”

“I loved being on agt,” Stonestreet said. “Maybe Sofia will get too busy and they call??!!”

“Any chance we ever get the cam and Mitchell spin-off?” another fan asked.

“We tried,” Stonestreet said.

“We need a Mitch and Cam spinoff,” begged another fan.

“Write to your congressman,” Stonestreet said.

He told another fan that he would do another TV series “someday maybe” and that there is no “Modern Family” movie in the offing.
