“I’ve been out kayaking basically since before I was walking; it has always been a part of my life,” said Sky Moses-Fitzgerald, rental coordinator at Cabot Trail Adventures.

“So much of our lives move quickly… out on the water, you are more separated from everyday life, and you may take things slower than you would in the city. For me, it’s just about being out there, being a part of nature, and seeing the world around you from an angle you usually don’t,” explained Moses-Fitzgerald.

Cape Breton is renowned for its breathtaking views, but it's also rich in history. In fact, the famous inventor Alexander Graham Bell first visited in 1885 and was captivated by its resemblance to his birthplace in Scotland. He decided to build a property there, continuing his lifelong passion for invention.

“Bell wanted a place that was neither too warm nor too crowded. He stopped in a small town called Baddeck, where every day was said to be a lazy Sunday,” explained Georgia Pardy, a student heritage interpreter at Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site.

“He said the rolling hills of Cape Breton reminded him of Scotland; he loved it so much... He worked on a lot of inventions here and did a lot to help the local community along with his wife, Mabel,” she continued.

Inside the museum, ramps guide you through exhibit spaces where you can discover Bell’s history, contributions to society, and his lesser-known inventions, apart from the telephone. One of the show-stopping exhibits is the aviation room, where a full-scale replica of the Silver Dart suspends from the ceiling as one of many attractions.

The Silver Dart is celebrated as the first powered, heavier-than-air machine to fly in Canada. It was designed by Alexander Graham Bell’s Association and piloted by J.A.D. McCurdy in 1909 on Baddeck Bay, Nova Scotia.

"We, as Cape Bretoners, are very proud of this heritage and are eager to share it with the world. I think that is why we (Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site) can be considered a staple,” said Pardy.

“The water is just a different experience you’re going to get from... just getting on the water... you can put your feet up and relax and just enjoy the scenery and see the mountains,” explained Paul Jamieson, owner of Sailing CBI (Cape Breton Island), a sailing and catamaran local business where guests can charter waters with local and knowledgeable guides.

"In the fall, you get the colours; in the summertime, you get beautiful sunsets and sunrises in the morning... It’s a hobby that recharges my battery all the time... I think the quietness and peace of mind. The quality of living we have here is phenomenal; we enjoy life," said Jamieson.
