A 10-year-old girl got more than she paid for while book shopping recently – aside from a book she also received a thoughtful note of encouragement from a stranger.

While perusing a bookstore with her family in Peterborough, Ont. Kiana Bromley picked up a copy of Shonda Rhime’s book ‘Year of Yes’ and uncovered an envelope lodged between it and another book.

Her father Winston Bromley told Buzzfeed Canada that at first his daughter was nervous to open the white envelope, which said “For You!” on it along with a smiley face.

Once she got past her trepidation, Kiana discovered an uplifting note that was meant to inspire.

“I hope you’re having a good day,” the note read. “Maybe it’s crazy to think this little note could make your day a little bit better, but I hope it does. Keep your head up and smile lots, because I think there’s a reason you were the one to find this letter and it must be because you’re awesome. I’m just one girl that feels like spreadin’ a little love, feel free to pass it on. Go show the world what you got! P.S. I believe in you!”

The anonymous note moved the little girl, who was then inspired to leave her own note for a stranger.

“It made me feel good about myself … that someone I didn’t know believed in me,” she told BuzzFeed Canada.

Her dad agreed.

“As human beings, sometimes that is all we need. Someone to believe in us,” he told the website. “My family was deeply touched by this message and how it made my daughter feel. We talked [about] it for the rest of the day. It made us smile.”
