This famous Chinese restaurant is a New York icon. Now it’s open in Coconut Grove

When the late Ed Schoenfeld, a guru of all things involving Chinese cuisine, decided he wanted to reinvent the Chinese dining scene in New York, the result was RedFarm. First launched in the West Village in 2011, the restaurant quickly became a destination for diners wanting a unique twist on classic dishes and famous for its Peking duck.

Now, like all things New York, RedFarm has found its way to Miami, in the former space of Mr. Moe’s in Coconut Grove’s Commodore Plaza.

The 7,000-square foot restaurant, which also has locations in New York’s Upper West Side and Austin, Texas, was destined for the Magic City, said operating partner Jeffrey Chodorow, who operates the restaurant with his son Zach Chodorow and Miami partner Alex Pirez.

“As a Miami native and resident, I always knew we would bring RedFarm here,” said Chodorow, owner of China Grill Management, which brought China Grill to South Beach in the mid 1990s, sparking a popular new wave of dining in the city. “Not only because I’m always craving RedFarm’s dishes, but many of our New York customers spend a lot of time here, or have moved here, and our Miami friends kept asking me when we were going to open here.”

The design of RedFarm Miami is inspired by the original’s modern rustic decor. There are communal banquet tables that use a Lazy Susan as the centerpiece. The space seats 154 in its main dining room, and there are two private dining rooms and 12 bar seats. Eventually, the owners plan to open an outdoor patio with 20 seats.

As for the menu, it will highlight some of dim sum master chef Joe Ng’s specialties from New York, like the photo-worthy and colorful Pac Man shrimp dumplings. You’ll also find signature dishes like Ed’s pastrami egg rolls, a spicy three-chili chicken and the marinated Creekstone rib steak.

There’s also Peking duck of course, which RedFarm reports was named as the best Peking duck in the world outside China by China’s national broadcaster Central TV.

The restaurant plans to add lunch service and a weekend brunch in the coming months.
