Fargo season five spoilers follow.

Fargo star Lamorne Morris has shared his reaction to his character's tragic death in the season five finale.

On an FBI mission to protect Dot (Juno Temple) from her ex-husband Roy (Jon Hamm), Morris's character Deputy Witt Farr decided to chase Roy down alone when he tried to escape.

Witt got him cornered and attempted to arrest him, but he was suddenly killed when Roy brutally stabbed him in the heart with a knife.

The actor, best known for playing Winston in sitcom New Girl, told Entertainment Weekly how it felt to watch his character's death on screen in the final episode of the anthology series, which aired on Tuesday (January 16).

He said: "I was given a heads up by Noah [Hawley, series creator], but for a while we were figuring out how the end would play out and what the device was gonna be. But it's different reading it than it is shooting it, and even shooting it from when you see it, so once I saw the episode, I was heartbroken.

"When you're watching it, you're feeling for the characters, and I definitely felt for my character. I hope people cry a lot. I really want them to cry a lot."

Despite the sadness surrounding Witt's death, Morris feels that it was realistic and necessary for the show.

He said: "The craziest things could happen to the best people in the smallest of towns. That's how these stories are made: they spawn from somewhere. And a lot of times it's what happens to good people."

Morris was also full of praise for co-star Hamm, and explained what it was like to shoot his death scene alongside him.

"First of all, he's super professional," he said. "But he was also intimidating, because he's a large guy and bloody and he's got a knife in his hand and a very powerful voice. He was very easy to work with because he's also very giving and we were working through a bunch of stuff during that day. There's a reason why he's Jon Hamm."

Fargo airs on FX in the US, Channel 4 in the UK, and streams on Netflix.
