Fatal crash closes Highway 401 near Belleville
A fatal three-vehicle crash closed eastbound Highway 401 between Belleville, Ont., and Greater Napanee, Ont., Thursday.
Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said in an email the crash happened around 6:30 a.m. Thursday just east of Shannonville Road. It involved two transport trucks and a passenger vehicle.
One person was pronounced dead at the scene, police said, and one other was taken to hospital with serious injuries. Police didn't identify which vehicles carried the victim and the injured person, nor have they named the victim.
Highway 401 was closed in both directions between the Marysville Road exit and the Shannonville exit until just before 1 p.m. Thursday when one of the two westbound lanes reopened.
It took until just before midnight for all lanes in both directions to reopen.
The crash happened about 225 kilometres southwest of Ottawa and 200 kilometres east of Toronto.
