A distant relative of Tyrann Mathieu is accused of attempting to extort millions from the NFL star by threatening to go to media with sexual assault accusations and telling his family members that he would kill them, WDSU in New Orleans reports.
The NBC affiliate obtained records from federal investigators stating that Geourvon Sears of New Orleans is out on bond after allegedly sending Mathieu multiple threatening texts and phone calls demanding a range from $1.5 to $5 million.
According to a federal affidavit obtained by WDSU, Sears called Mathieu on April 20 demanding “$1.5 million deposited into his account.”
Sears backed up his demands with threats to tell media that Mathieu had committed sexual assault, according to documents.
‘Done talking, emailing TMZ now’
He later texted Mathieu with a demand of “$5 million by Friday, I’m done talking, emailing TMZ now,” according to records.
Records show that when Mathieu blocked him on his phone, Sears told Mathieu’s family members days later, “I want $1.5 million by Friday or I am going to kill all you all.”
Mathieu’s family took threat seriously
Mathieu’s relatives were in genuine fear for their safety, according to the criminal complaint.
Mathieu’s representatives told WDSU that the accused extortionist has mental health struggles.
"He's dealing with a family member who is dealing with a mental health issue," Denise White of EAG Sports Management told WDSU. "Tyrann is fine. His family is fine. They are getting through."
Mathieu, a New Orleans native and former LSU star, signed in the offseason with the Kansas City Chiefs. The six-year NFL veteran and one-time All-Pro previously played for the Arizona Cardinals and Houston Texans.
WDSU reports that he was in New Orleans for a charity event around the time federal agents were making their case against Sears.
