Woman's body recovered from van that drove off B.C. ferry

Police have recovered the body of a 32-year-old woman from the van that broke through a barrier gate and drove off a docked BC Ferries boat near Gabriola Island, B.C.

An RCMP dive team was able to enter the van and recover the body at 1 p.m. PT Thursday from the vehicle, which was submerged about 40 metres underwater near the Gabriola Island ferry terminal.

Police said the woman was from Gabriola Island, but her family has asked that her name not be released.

The van had sped down a BC Ferries dock, crashed through a chain link fence, sped across a tied-up ferry and launched off the other end into the ocean, before sinking at about 3:45 a.m. PT on Wednesday.

Experts recovered the vehicle on Thursday by using inflated air sacs to float it to the surface.

As of 2:30 p.m. PT, BC Ferries said normal ferry service had resumed.
