'Feud: Capote vs the Swans' Is Appointment Viewing

In the latest episode of FX's Feud: Capote vs The Swans, Truman Capote spends the day with the legendary James Baldwin. The episode takes viewers back to 1975, a day after Capote’s short story, “La Côte Basque, 1965,” was published in Esquire.” Readers expected a fictional tale—like Capote's previous bestsellers, Breakfast at Tiffany’s and In Cold Blood. Instead, Capote chose to write about his own friend group: a league of powerful New York socialites. “They were like the original housewives,” series creator Ryan Murphy told Town and Country.

Feud is based on true events, but the meet-up between Capote and Baldwin is pure fiction. In real life, we never actually learn why Capote betrayed his friends. Legend has it he just had writer's block! When Capote couldn’t come up with anything better to write about, he zeroed in on his friends. At the time, his inner circle included a myriad of wealthy, well-connected women, such as Barbara “Babe” Paley, Gloria Guinness, Marella Agnelli, Slim Hayward, Pamela Churchill, C.Z. Guest, and Lee Radziwill (Jackie Kennedy’s sister). In Feud, a star-studded crew plays the Swans, including Naomi Watts (Babe Paley), Diane Lane (Slim Keith), Chloë Sevigny (C.Z Guest), Calista Flockhart (Lee Radziwill), Demi Moore (Ann Woodward), and Molly Ringwald (Joanne Carson). Last but certainly not least is the great Tom Hollander—who brings Capote to life.

Though the taste of what would become Capote’s Answered Prayers was fictional, he based the characters and their struggles on the women he’d grown close to. After publishing the story, Capote was cast out of high society for his betrayal. Answered Prayers was never finished, but its legacy lives on. Feud: Capote vs. the Swans is also adapted from Laurence Leamer’s novel Capote’s Women, which chronicles Capote's dramatic downfall. But first, he has to take down the Swans.

The last episode, “The Secret Inner Lives of Swans,” sees Capote get his groove back as he convinces himself that the Swans deserve to have their personal business published in a national magazine. He insists they’re bad people, fails to see his own transgressions, and decides to continue writing. In the next episode, “Hat, Gloves, and Effete Homosexuals,” Capote travels to California for a fresh start—but that might be more difficult than he anticipated.

The story continues on Wednesday, February 28. Look below for a guide on how (and where) to watch the rest of Feud: Capote vs. the Swans.
