Fire at GK's Family Restaurant in Richibucto 'suspicious,' woman arrested

A woman is facing charges in connection with a "suspicious" fire that destroyed a restaurant in Richibucto last week, say RCMP.

GK's Family Restaurant, located on Main Street in the northeastern village, was gutted by fire on the evening of March 21.

The restaurant was closed at the time and no one was injured, but the investigation led police to believe it may have been deliberately set, Sgt. Patrick Tardif said in a statement.

A 34-year-old woman was arrested on March 24 and later released on conditions and a promise to appear in Moncton provincial court on May 17, said Tardif.

RCMP continue to investigate the fire, in conjunction with the provincial fire marshal's office, he said.

Crews were called to the fire at around 9:40 p.m. About 30 firefighters from Richibucto and neighbouring Rexton responded and remained on the scene overnight until about 5 a.m.

Owner Aline Khoury has said she hopes to rebuild.

Anyone with information about the fire is asked to call the Richibucto RCMP at 506-523-4611, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
