::Fire officals call for 'defensible space' upkeep

as the Lake Fire scorches Santa Barbara

::Scott Safechuck, Public Information Officer, Santa Barbara County Fire Department

"Hi, this is Captain Scott Safechuck, Public Information Officer for the Santa Barbara County Fire Department, currently assigned to the Lake incident, and I'm standing at the Zaca Lake Resort. You can see behind me here they did an excellent job with defensible space, which allowed our firefighters from Santa Barbara County to defend these cabins during the firefight last night. So, this is a testament. If you haven't cut your weeds, please do so, and I will give further updates as this fire continues."

The blaze started on Friday afternoon when it was estimated to be about 4,600 acres (1,860 hectares) in size, local media reports said on Saturday. The reports said it has since spread to roughly three times that initial figure and has prompted evacuation warnings in nearby areas.

ALERTCalifornia also released dramatic images captured on timelapse video, showing the Lake Fire burning on Friday (July 5) and Saturday (July 6).

The cause of the blaze remains unknown.
