First-hand witness accounts shape the narrative for the second season of Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal. The second of three installments in the Netflix documentary series continues to delve into the night of June 7, 2021, when Alex Murdaugh murdered his wife, Maggie, and his son, Paul. This time, the focus is on the details that paint a fuller picture of the twisted web of lies and alleged crimes surrounding Murdaugh.

The official trailer for the upcoming season, premiering Sept. 20, explores the varying levels of power and secrets that made this particular case more complicated than it first appeared. The set of episodes will include insight from former Murdaugh family housekeeper Blanca Turrubiate-Simpson, Libby Murdaugh’s caregiver Mushelle “Shelly” Smith, alleged hitman Curtis Edward Smith, and trial juror Gwen Generette. It will also see the return of Paul Murdaugh’s ex-girlfriend Morgan Doughty, friend Anthony Cook, and Wall Street Journal reporter Valerie Bauerlein.

“Folks are going to have their opinions. Mine is not an opinion. I lived it,” Turrubiate-Simpson says in the trailer. “I was there.”

In another moment, Smith, who had been accused of helping Murdaugh sell drugs and launder money, recalls a phone call he received, where Murdaugh told him: “Things just got all fucked up.”

Murdaugh was found guilty of the murder of his wife and son on March 2, 2023. Earlier this month, his attorneys filed a motion for a new trial and are seeking a federal investigation, claiming a South Carolina clerk tampered with the jury that convicted him.

“I think he blames us all for his downfall,” Doughty adds.

Murdaugh still faces more than 100 criminal charges, having admitted to hiring a hitman to kill him in a botched insurance fraud attempt and was indicted of drug trafficking and money-laundering charges. Smith was charged in the assisted suicide scheme, and Murdaugh’s lawyers claimed Smith was Murdaugh’s drug dealer who supplied him opioids that allegedly fueled Murdaugh’s two-decade addiction. Murdaugh is also the subject of about a dozen lawsuits.

On Thursday, Murdaugh appeared in court for the first time since his murder conviction for a status hearing regarding a separate trial as he faces charges for allegedly stealing insurance payments meant for the family of his late housekeeper, Gloria Satterfield. Satterfield died after complications related to a fall on the Murdaugh property in 2018. A trial date for the case has not yet been set.
