Five of the top 10 NBA stars from Texas call Dallas-Fort Worth home. Here’s the list

A new report about NBA player’s home states reveal that Texas has produced a significant amount of talented hoopsters.

SmartBettingGuide, a sports betting website, put together a list of the top 10 states that have produced NBA and ABA players. The list used data from Pro Basketball Reference to determine the rankings.

The Basketball Association of America was founded in 1946, later merging with the National Basketball League in 1949 to create the National Basketball Association. The American Basketball Association was founded in 1967 and merged with the NBA in 1976, thus creating the league everyone knows today.

SmartBettingGuide’s list ranked the states that have produced the most NBA and ABA players. Here’s where Texas landed:

What state has produced the most NBA and ABA players?

California takes the top spot on the list, as 442 NBA and ABA players are from the “Golden State.”

The state has produced such current talent as the Milwaukee Bucks’ Damian Lillard, Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd and the Los Angeles Clippers pair of Kawhi Leonard and James Harden.

Texas came in fifth on the list:

  2. New York- 438 players

  3. Illinois- 300 players

  4. Pennsylvania- 249 players

  5. Texas- 210 players

  6. Ohio- 205 players

  7. Indiana- 173 players

  8. Michigan- 170 players

  9. New Jersey- 152 players

  10. North Carolina- 149 players

Who are the top NBA players from Texas?

Of the over 200 players produced by Texas and played in the NBA, there’s a whole lot of talent between them.

Ranker, an entertainment polling website, has put together a ranking of the best NBA players from Texas. Here’s who Ranker voters put in the top 10:

  1. Jimmy Butler (Houston): Butler is a six-time NBA All-Star currently on the Miami Heat.

  2. Chris Bosh (Dallas): The retired big man played 13 seasons across the Toronto Raptors and Miami Heat, winning two NBA championships.

  3. Trae Young (Lubbock): The 25-year-old star for the Atlanta Hawks has been selected twice as an NBA All-Star.

  4. Grant Hill (Dallas): Hill played 19 seasons in the NBA across four teams and is in the Hall of Fame.

  5. LaMarcus Aldridge (Dallas): Aldridge retired earlier this year after 16 seasons, where he was named to seven NBA All-Star teams.

  6. Julius Randle (Dallas): Randle has been in the league since 2014 and now plays for the New York Knicks, where’s been named an NBA All-Star twice.

  7. De’Aaron Fox (Katy): Fox has been a Sacramento King since entering the league in 2017, earning his first NBA All-Star nod earlier this year.

  8. Marcus Smart (Flower Mound): Smart has played a majority of his career with Boston Celtics, winning the NBA Defensive Player of the Year in 2022, and now plays on the Memphis Grizzlies.

  9. DeAndre Jordan (Houston): Jordan is currently on his seventh NBA team, the Denver Nuggets, where he won his first NBA Championship in 2023.

  10. Jarrett Allen (Round Rock): Allen was born in California but grew up in Texas and is currently playing for the Cleveland Cavaliers
