Flash flood warning issued in Portsmouth and Norfolk Virginia amid heavy rainfall

A flash flood warning was issued Friday until 5:45 p.m. ranging from eastern Virginia to southeasternPennsylvania by the National Weather Service.

Residents in Portsmouth and Norfolk were among those affected by heavy rains, where up to 3 inches of precipitation were possible, according to some forecasts.

Small creeks, streams, streets, highways, underpasses and urban areas have begun to experience flash floods and they are expected to continue. Flash flooding is likely to target low-lying areas and areas with poor drainage soon.

The weather service said that areas of Virginia Beach and Chesapeake could also be affected.

Residents were encouraged to seek shelter indoors due to thunderstorms with winds as high at 60 mph rolled through Virginia Beach and other Hampton Roads earlier on Friday.
