Flooding issue going to top of priority list, says acting C.B.S. mayor

Earlier this week, a heavy rainfall and subsequent run-off from a new subdivision across the street flooded several older homes in a Conception Bay South neighbourhood.

Steve Tessier, acting mayor of C.B.S., told CBC Thursday that a new, bigger culvert is on the way, and the area in question is at the top of the town's priority list.

Tessier said an existing drainage system couldn't handle the rain that fell, and the engineering department has taken that into account.

"We've asked them to review it, look at it, see what needs to be done," he said.

"See what we can do to relieve this problem and hopefully not let it happen again. You know it is our utmost responsibility to make sure that people don't get flooded out."

Homeowner Cyndie Stapleton, who said she's been in contact with the Department of Transportation and Works for more than a year, asked that a new culvert be installed on her street.

Stapleton's garage was badly flooded during Tuesday's downpour.

"We're on our own — and as you can see, I've got a beach in front of my garage," she said.

"I don't know how we're going to get it out, but nobody's offered us any help. Apparently, it's not enough damage to merit filing a claim, but I can't get anyone to come and help us get it out of the driveway."

Stapleton said it wasn't just her property that sustained damage, but her neighbour's home as well.

"Jamie's basement was destroyed. His basement, all his sub-floor, everything is gone," she said.

"He is in the process now of having his basement completely gutted. He has a company over there now from insurance, and they are taking things out as we speak. It should have never happened."

Meanwhile, a statement emailed to CBC News from the Department of Transportation and Works said it is aware that a new culvert is needed in the area, but it is not known when the culvert will be installed.
