Football schedule changing for some Midlands high school games, and not because of rain

Some high school football games will have later start times this week in South Carolina because of extreme heat in the forecast for Friday.

Games that have been moved back from 7:30 to 8 p.m. in the Midlands are South Aiken at Lexington, Crestwood at Gray Collegiate, Westwood at Lower Richland and Mid-Carolina at Chapin. More are expected to change, with at least one game possibly moving to Thursday night.

Several other games around the state also have been moved.

According to National Weather Service’s forecast, the high on Friday is set for 100 degrees with a heat index of 105 degrees. Those readings are forecast to be closer to 92 and 97 around 7 p.m., according to the Weather Service, then 89 and 92 at 8 p.m. The heat index at 9 p.m. will still be around 90.
