Former Alberta RCMP officer sentenced to jail for sexual assault, breach of trust

A former Alberta RCMP officer will spend two months in jail for one count of sexual assault and two counts of breach of trust.

Elliot Teed was charged after a traffic stop just outside Bow Island, Alta., on Feb. 12, 2015.

He was sentenced in a Medicine Hat courtroom on Wednesday morning after a five-day, judge-only trial.

Traffic stop pat down

The conviction stems from an incident involving a woman, who cannot be identified due to a publication ban, who was stopped by Teed and an auxiliary officer during a checkstop.

She said there was marijuana in her car and was arrested. She was patted down twice by Teed, and she testified the officer inappropriately touched her breast during the second pat down.

The woman was handed a 24-hour driving suspension and was ordered to park her car in a nearby lot. She testified that Teed returned to her vehicle alone and propositioned her. She said he asked her to go for a ride in his car, a remark she interpreted to be sexual.

Sentences served concurrently

A victim impact statement read in court says the woman has lot her trust in others since the incident and has struggled with anxiety.

The Crown was pushing for a sentence of six to nine months, while Teed's defence argued for a suspended sentence and probation on the sexual assault charge, and a conditional sentence for breach of trust.

In the end, Justice Robert Hall sentenced Teed to two months in jail on one count of sexual assault and two months in jail for each breach of trust charge. The sentences will be served concurrently.

Teed resigned from the RCMP in 2017.
