Former Carolina Panthers star Christian McCaffrey’s uptown penthouse sells for $3 million

A couple from Myrtle Beach and their two sons say they’re thrilled about moving into an uptown penthouse previously owned by former Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey.

“We didn’t want to, but we had to,” Amber Watts said with a chuckle. “My son is a big Panthers fan and my son is running back, too. So, he said that he had to have that.”

McCaffrey, who now plays for the San Francisco 49ers, left a signed game-worn jersey and cleats, as part of the sale.

“They were pretty pumped about it,” she said about her sons, Michael and Ethan.

Alex Hall, a Stephen Cooley Real Estate agent, brokered the deal for Amber and her husband Ryan, which closed Friday at $3 million — less than its initial listing price. In March, the penthouse went on the open market for $3.75 million after he was traded to 49ers and was listed as most expensive condo ever sold in Charlotte on a per-square-foot basis.

The two-story penthouse at 222 S. Caldwell St., atop the Skye Condominiums, has about 4,000 square-feet of living space, three bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms.

The condo on the 22nd-floor has 25-foot high ceilings, double-height windows, a chef’s kitchen and a glass and steel staircase going to the second floor. A hallway on the main floor has mural art by Tampa, Florida-based artist, Michael Vahl depicting people and fictional characters that inspired McCaffrey.

Some of the other features of living at Skye include a rooftop pool, fitness center, room service and access to rooftop restaurant Fahrenheit. After moving in, the family will enjoy a view of the skyline and will be closer to Bank of America Stadium and the Spectrum Center as season ticket holders for the Panthers and the Charlotte Hornets.

The penthouse will be their second home and the Watts will reside in primarily in Myrtle Beach.

Ryan is a marketing professional and Amber is the founder of Lux and Love, an online women’s clothing boutique.
