Former Chiefs quarterback Chad Henne explains why he turned down offer to join Jets

The Chiefs’ game Sunday night against the Jets could have had an interesting subplot, and I’m not talking about a celebrity fan who is expected to be at MetLife Stadium.

After quarterback Aaron Rodgers suffered a season-ending injury in New York’s first game, the Jets reached out to former Chiefs quarterback Chad Henne. New York was looking for a veteran who would be happy to be Zach Wilson’s backup and knew the Jets’ system or coaching staff, Josina Anderson reported.

Henne, who retired after the Chiefs won Super Bowl LVII, told the Reading (Pennsylvania) Eagle he was excited to receive a contract offer from the Jets. However, he explained the decision to decline the offer.

“I hung them up for the right reasons,” Henne told the Eagle’s Matthew Knaub. “I didn’t want to go back and put my body into it.”

Henne told the Eagle he has been enjoying time with his family, while also tutoring high school quarterbacks in the offseason. And he’s giving back to one of his alma maters by serving as a volunteer coach at Wilson Senior High School in West Lawn, Pennsylvania.

As a star quarterback at Wilson, Henne threw for 7,071 passing yards, the fourth-most all-time in Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association history, CBS Sports noted.

“I think I have too much knowledge to give up and just not be around it, to just sit at home and not speak my word,” Henne told the Eagle. “That’s why I got involved here. Just so much knowledge that I can give back to our kids.”
