Former child star arrested in connection with Sechelt bank robbery

Police have arrested a former child actor after a rare bank holdup last week on B.C.'s Sunshine Coast.

Deleriyes Joe Cramer, 42, faces several charges including robbery, disguise with intent to commit an indictable offence, failing to stop for a peace officer and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

RCMP say a man in disguise — wearing a wig of shoulder-length hair, a bandana and sunglasses — entered a bank last Thursday afternoon in Sechelt. He demanded money and fled on foot.

In spite of the disguise, police recognized the suspect from surveillance video because they had recent dealings with him, said Const. Harrison Mohr of the Sunshine Coast RCMP.

Suspect tried to flee town, say police

Police said the vehicle charges stem from an incident the next day when an officer tried to stop the suspect who fled. Cramer was arrested on May 1.

Cramer, whose professional name was Joey Cramer, starred in the 1986 film Flight of the Navigator, about a boy who travels eight years into the future and has an adventure with an alien ship.

He also appeared in Runaway (1984) and Stone Fox (1987).

Police said Cramer lives in nearby Gibsons.

"Here on the Sunshine Coast, robberies are extremely rare," Const. Mohr said. "We're fortunate that the officers were able to get the suspect into custody quickly."

He said it's not known if the suspect used a weapon during the holdup.

Cramer is in custody and is expected to appear in Sechelt Provincial Court on Wednesday, May 4.
