Former Georgia Republican Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan says he will vote for Biden in 2024

WASHINGTON — Former Georgia Republican Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan said he will vote for President Joe Biden in November, claiming that ex-President Donald Trump has “disqualified himself through his conduct and character.”

Duncan argued in an op-ed, published in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Monday, that the former president has spread “unfounded conspiracy theories” that led to the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack, handled the COVID-19 pandemic in an “erratic” manner and fueled racial unrest in the country.

“Yes, elections are a binary choice. Yes, serious questions linger about President Biden’s ability to serve until the age of 86. His progressive policies aren’t to conservatives’ liking,” wrote Duncan. “But the GOP will never rebuild until we move on from the Trump era, leaving conservative (but not angry) Republicans like me no choice but to pull the lever for Biden.”

In 2020, Duncan, then lieutenant governor of Georgia, openly pushed back against Trump’s false claims that the election was rigged. He also testified before the Fulton County grand jury in the investigation of Trump and his allies’ alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election in Georgia, of which they were indicted for last year.

Duncan criticized Republicans in his op-ed for falling in line behind Trump, citing three examples who he called “fiercest detractors” of the former president: Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu and former Attorney General Bill Barr.

“Trump has shown us who he is. We should believe him. To think he is going to change at the age of 77 is beyond improbable,” he wrote.
