Fredericton police have arrested a man who was wanted on an outstanding warrant and was considered a threat to public safety.

Rene Michael Gerard, 38, of Fredericton, was arrested without incident in Nackawic shortly after 2 p.m. on Tuesday, about two hours after police had released his photo and asked for the public's help in locating him.

He will appear in court to face several charges in connection with an incident that occurred in Fredericton on Feb. 11, including forcible confinement, sexual assault, assault, uttering threats, breach of probation and breach of an undertaking, said spokeswoman Alycia Morehouse said in a statement.

No details about the incident have been released.

Members of the major crime unit, emergency response teams and police dog team were conducting surveillance in a residential area in Nackawic where a suspect was believed to be in hiding, said Morehouse.

The suspect attempted to flee a residence and a brief foot chase ensued, she said.

Police had earlier advised anyone who saw Gerard not to approach him, but to call police immediately.
