Friday’s girls’ basketball rewind: Independence, Myers Park win rivalry games

The girls’ high school basketball teams from Independence and Myers Park got big wins against conference rivals Friday night.

At South Mecklenburg, Myers Park ran off to a big lead and held off a late Sabres rally to win 45-38.

At Independence, the Patriots blew out archrival Butler 67-34 on a night when junior Kamryn Kitchen scored her 1,000th point and senior Chloe Moss grabbed her 500th career rebound.

Independence girls roll in Mint Hill

Independence held Butler to two second-quarter points after a wide-open first period, then gradually pulled away in the second half for a 67-34 romp Friday night.

Kitchen hit the 1,000-point mark for her career with a third-quarter jump shot that gave her team a 40-24 lead.

“There was a lot of hype about it at school,” Kitchen said afterward. “I knew people were excited about it.”

Kitchen said she wasn’t keeping track during the game, but she knew when she eclipsed the mark.

“Everyone started screaming, so I figured that was it,” she said.

Coach Lauren Galvani called a timeout and Kitchen was presented with a game ball amid a huge ovation from the full house.

Later in the game, Moss reached the 500-rebound mark for her career. Once again, Galvani called a timeout for a special presentation.

Kitchen finished with 21 points, and Jessica Worthey added 20. The Patriots (14-4, 5-1) outscored Butler (10-6, 4-2) 40-17 in the second half. The first quarter was played at breakneck speed, with Independence leading 20-15. The Patriots’ defense clamped down on Butler after that.

“We’ve got a lot of players who contribute in a lot of ways on this team,” Galvani said.

She pointed to the play of Kaylee Carson, who missed most of last season with a knee injury and recently returned to action. Carson played extremely well upon her return, Galvani said, then missed the last three games with some knee soreness. She returned Friday and scored seven points.

“She’s a special player,” Galvani said of Carson. “That’s the kind of team we have.”

Myers Park girls hold off South Meck

Myers Park head coach Barbara Nelson gave an extra-long postgame speech to her team after Friday’s 45-38 win over South Mecklenburg.

With the win, the Mustangs (16-0, 4-0 SoMECK) knocked the Sabres (9-7, 3-1) out of a tie for first place in the conference. But Nelson felt her team could have played better.

“When we stuck to the plan we had a lot of success,” Nelson said. “When we got away from the plan is when [South Meck] made their runs. Hopefully [my girls] see that the plan works. Stick to the plan and let it happen.”

Senior point guard Laura Lassiter finished with nine points for the Mustangs. Like her coach, Lassiter felt the Mustangs could play much better.

“It wasn’t our best win,” Lassiter said. “We just have to take what we did out there and learn from it. A win is a win, but we have to learn from it because I know we are a lot better than what we showed tonight.”
