The cost of gas soared by almost seven cents a litre across Newfoundland and Labrador Thursday, as the provincial fuels regulator responded to market changes.

The Public Utilities Board increased the ceiling price of gas by 6.9 cents per litre, putting the maximum price for self-serve unleaded fuel on the Avalon Peninsula — where prices in the province are usually cheapest — at $1.78 per litre. Some retailers charge less.

Maximum prices across the rest of Newfoundland now range as high as $1.95 per litre, while prices in Labrador range as high as $2.12.

Diesel increased by 3.6 cents per litre across the province, putting prices between $2.08 and just over $2.19 per litre in Newfoundland and between $2.01 and $2.55 per litre in Labrador.

Average gas prices across Canada have been climbing since early January, matching a rise in the cost of crude oil, according to the price-checking website GasBuddy.com.

The price of furnace oil increased by 2.92 cents per litre, meaning customers in Newfoundland will pay between $1.26 and $1.44 per litre, depending on their location.

Stove oil increased by 2.53 cents per litre across Newfoundland and parts of Labrador, but increased by 3.32 cents per litre in Labrador West and Churchill Falls. The change puts prices between $1.29 and $1.48 per litre in Newfoundland and between $1.41 and just over $1.94 per litre in Labrador.

Propane was the lone fuel to decrease in price Thursday, down 2.7 cents per litre. Prices for the fuel now range between 99 cents and $1.12 per litre on the island and between 85 cents and $1.30 in Labrador.
