Harrison, best known to boomers for his long-running role on Trapper John, M.D., played Gregory Chase, the father of Finn (Michael Easton) and Chase (Josh Swickard). His character died in his sleep after suffering from ALS.

Mostly recently, his character officiated the wedding of his son Chase to Brook Lynn Quartermaine (Amanda Setton).

Easton paid tribute to his co-star on Instagram by saying “One of the finest actors I’ve ever had the privilege of working with and an even better human being. I learned so much from you, my friend, and it was an absolute honor to get to share a stage with you these past three years. Your talent, grace and powerful presence will be greatly missed around the studio.”

Nancy Lee Grahn, who plays Alexis on GH, said on X that it “was hard to say goodbye to working with my friend, Gregory Harrison. What a treat to share the stage with this guy, and getting to know him was a gift. I truly love & respect everything about him. And I know he’s seeing this. He doesn’t post, but likes to read mine.”

Harrison told Soap Opera Digest in 2023 that he had many opportunities over the years to join a daytime drama — especially All My Children. But “it scared me so bad.”

But after the pandemic, Harrison was offered the part on GH and immediately said yes. “It was almost like an out-of-body experience, because I was just desperate to go do what I love to do,” he told the outlet. “And then after I hung up the phone, I went, ‘Oh, my God, what did I just say yes to?!’ You know, ‘Why did you wait till you were 70-something to test your brain with 30 pages of dialogue a night? What, are you crazy? Are you out of your mind?’ I went through terror for a couple of weeks and then I started the show… The terror ended after two or three weeks.”

A longtime journeyman actor, Harrison’s other TV credits include stints on One Tree Hill, CSI: NY, Ringer and Joey.
