College Student Dies After Collapsing at Frat Party — and Police Are Investigating Why

College Student Dies After Collapsing at Frat Party

Investigators are looking into the death of a 20-year-old college student who suddenly collapsed during a fraternity party last week and died.

Caroline Smith, who was studying history and communications at Furman University in South Carolina, was seen drinking alcohol at the party on Hilton Head Island the evening of April 5.

According to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office, detectives are still trying to determine what led to her death.

While nothing has been ruled out by police, it does not appear Smith’s death was the result of foul play.

A memorial service honoring Smith — who was from Sandy Springs, Georgia — is set to begin at 5:30 p.m. Friday at the Daniel Memorial Chapel on Furman’s campus grounds.

While an autopsy has been performed on her body, the results have not yet been made public.

Smith fell as she was speaking with her boyfriend.

The boyfriend called out for someone to call 911 and started performing CPR on Smith.

She did not respond to the CPR, and was pronounced dead moments after paramedics arrived.

Police spoke with several party guests, including Smith’s older brother, Ryan, who also attends Furman.

He said the two were in town for an event and had been drinking but did not use any illicit drugs.

Smith was a member of Kappa Delta sorority.

Her obituary describes her as an avid Atlanta Braves fan.

“She was highly regarded and loved by her fellow students at Furman University and in her sorority,” her obituary reads. “She regularly ran half marathons, played soccer throughout high school and loved all outdoor activities.

“She was the perfect younger sister to her devoted and caring older brother, Ryan Smith. Caroline and her big brother Ryan were inseparable,” it continues. “Only 16 months apart, they were more like twins and most definitely best friends. Ryan remained by her side until the end. Now Caroline will remain by Ryan until they see each other again.”
