Former Georgia Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan is reaching across the aisle to endorse President Joe Biden in the upcoming presidential election.

Once the state's No. 2 Republican, Duncan, 49, announced he is voting for Biden, 81, in a passionate op-ed letter published on May 6. His message aimed to steer Republicans away from Donald Trump's campaign for a second term.

Duncan's letter, published in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, labeled Trump, 77, “a criminal defendant without a moral compass” as he listed his reasons why he deemed Trump an unworthy candidate for reelection.

“Unlike Trump, I’ve belonged to the GOP my entire life,” he wrote. “This November, I am voting for a decent person I disagree with on policy over a criminal defendant without a moral compass.”

The former lieutenant governor, who openly criticized Trump’s claims of fraud in the 2020 election, continued in his letter that “the GOP will never rebuild until we move on from the Trump era,” leaving him with “no choice” but to vote for Biden.

“The alternative is another term of Trump, a man who has disqualified himself through his conduct and his character,” he went on. “The headlines are ablaze with his hush-money trial over allegations of improper record-keeping for payments to conceal an affair with an adult-film star.”

Duncan also mentioned the former president’s April Time interview in which he stated the restricting policies he would put in place if he secured a second term, and blamed Trump for causing the Jan. 6, 2021, riots at the U.S. Capitol, among his reasons to vote against him.

“Trump has shown us who he is. We should believe him. To think he is going to change at the age of 77 is beyond improbable,” he added in the letter.

Elsewhere in his letter, Duncan called out Trumps’ ex-attorney Bill Barr for sharing his support for Trump.

“Barr saw firsthand Trump’s ability to cause damage,” he wrote. “Barr’s declaration that the Justice Department uncovered no evidence of widespread voter fraud that could change the outcome of the 2020 election infuriated his boss and set off a chain of events that ended with Jan. 6.”

Duncan previously slammed Trump in a 2022 op-ed for holding back the Republican Party after serving as Georgia’s lieutenant governor when Trump lost the 2020 election. He also testified in the Fulton County investigation into Trump and his allies for their alleged election subversion efforts.

Following the release of his latest op-ed, Duncan told CNN’s Laura Coates on May 7 that Trump “is not a Republican” in his eyes.

“He doesn’t represent our brand. He doesn’t represent our future. He’s a horrible human being at this point. We’re watching that play out hour by hour in the courtroom,” he said.

“It’s time to move on," Duncan continued. "If we’re going to heal as a party and truly get back to doing the things that we should do — and that’s be conservative but not angry or crazy or liars — we should turn the page immediately from Donald Trump.”

Georgia will play a significant role in the 2024 election, as a narrowly divided state with 16 Electoral College votes. Once firmly Republican, Georgia swung blue in 2020 when Biden won by just 0.2%.
