Gillian Anderson Looks Back at Her Most Viral Red Carpet Looks — from a Peekaboo Thong to “the” Vagina Dress
Anderson never misses an opportunity to make a statement with her style
If there's one thing Gillian Anderson is going to be, it's iconic.
The Sex Education star made an absolute splash on the 2024 Golden Globe Awards red carpet when she showed up in a custom strapless Gabriela Hearst gown covered in embroidered vaginas. That dress was far from the first time she'd made a statement on a red carpet, though.
In an Instagram video posted on Monday, the actress (while getting her blonde hair touched up), shared a video of a few other key viral moments from her red carpet résumé. To the tune of Kim Kardashian saying, "Because it's iconic, and I love to do iconic s---," Anderson shows off the Gabriella Hearst dress, plus her plunging Valentino dress from the British Fashion Awards earlier this year and her extremely iconic peekaboo thong dress from the 2001 Vanity Fair Oscar Afterparty.
For the 2001 party, Anderson arrived in an Eduardo Lucero dress that, while beautiful from the front, with its cinched waist, really needed to be seen from the back. The actress let her thong to all the talking, peeking out in the open back of the floor-length dress. She matched her glasses to the hue of the dress and carried a floral handbag for her accessory.
Over the years, she's continued to bring turn heads on red carpets, always ready to wear something daring and gorgeous.

For the British Fashion Awards this year, she stepped out in a red velvet Valentino gown that dipped down to her navel in the front and all the way down her back. It dipped on the sides as well, showing plenty of skin all the way around and upping the sexiness of the whole look.
She showed off her getting-ready process on Instagram, which also gave a full look at the beautiful garment.
Anderson's most recent viral moment came at the Golden Globe Awards, when she wore her statement-making gown.
She told Deadline on the red carpet that she chose the dress for "so many reasons."
"My dress is designed by Gabriella Hearst, and it has vaginas on it," Anderson, who played a sex therapist on her hit Netflix show, told the reporter on the carpet while showing off the dress. She went on to call the dress "brand appropriate."
Inside, she told PEOPLE — after receiving a hug from Jennifer Garner — that the dress has a floral inspiration, noting what she loved most about it was that “it’s covered in peonies!”
According to the label, each motif on the dress took 3.5 hours to embroider.

The actress has been very open about encouraging women to speak out about their sexuality.
Last year, she revealed in an Instagram video that she is curating a book about women and sex — and she even asked her social media followers to share their sexual fantasies with her.
