A two-year-old girl died Thursday evening after falling into the Bow River near Canmore.

Canmore RCMP said they received a 911 call shortly before 5 p.m. about a child possibly in the water near the Bow River Campground, roughly five kilometres southeast of downtown Canmore.

RCMP officers, fire crews, conservation officers and a mountain rescue team all responded to help find the girl. About a half hour after the initial 911 call, a firefighter found the child in the river.

"Just before 5:30 [p.m.], RCMP were advised that fire had located the missing two-year-old daughter in the river, downstream from where she was last seen," said Cpl. Troy Savinkoff, an RCMP spokesperson.

An ambulance brought the child to the Canmore hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

"Our thoughts go out to the family of the deceased," Savinkoff said.

An autopsy to determine the child's cause of death is slated to be performed, authorities said. The investigation into the girl's death remains ongoing.

Canmore is located about 100 kilometres west of Calgary.
