Top Gun: Maverick star Glen Powell is swapping the big screen for the small screen in a new football-themed TV series from Hulu.

According to TVLine, Powell has signed on as the lead in Chad Powers, a comedy series, which consists of 30-minute episodes, based on former New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning’s famous ESPN+ sketch.

Powell will serve as co-writer and executive producer on the upcoming show alongside Loki creator Michael Waldron.

Chad Powers will follow college football quarterback Russ Holiday who "after nuking his Division 1 career due to bad behaviour, disguises himself and walks onto a struggling Southern football team as the talented, affable Chad Powers."

"We're both diehard college football fans. When we saw Eli as Chad Powers, we knew that was the way into a big, fun story about this world. We're excited to be part of this team, and can't wait to get Chad in the game," Powell and Waldron shared in a joint statement.

Manning, who serves as executive producer on the show alongside his brother Peyton Manning, Ben Brown and Jamie Horowitz, said: "The love for Chad Powers has surprised me in spectacular ways. I played 16 years in the NFL, but now when I'm in a restaurant or walking through an airport, it's not uncommon for fans to scream, 'Hey Chad!'"

Speaking to Variety following the news that a third movie was in the works, Powell said: "I talk to [Joseph] Kosinski, [Tom] Cruise and Jerry [Bruckheimer] all the time. There is stuff happening and it sounds very exciting.

"I don't know when I'll be going back… I'm sure there is a jet waiting for me sometime in the future."
