Gogglebox's Stephen Webb was missing from this week's episode

Gogglebox returned for a brand new series last night (February 18), but a fan-favourite TV commentator was missing.

Stephen Webb – who has been on the show since it began and currently shares the sofa with his husband Daniel – was absent from the series premiere, and has revealed on social media why he wasn't able to film this week.

Sharing a short video to his Instagram, Stephen told fans that he had tested positive for COVID and so was isolating this week away from his partner.

He let fans know that he was fine and set up in a small room in their home, with Daniel appearing through the glass behind him from another room, and was looking forward to returning next week.

"Hello, this is a message to the Gogglebox crew. Good luck filming this week. I can't wait to see you Friday," he said. "I need a laugh desperately."

After revealing his positive result, Daniel can be heard in the background saying: "We've locked him up in this room for everyone's benefit" whilst Stephen, in good spirits, added: "Tiny bed, little bathroom, little old me stuck out here on me own."

Last night's episode saw the cast responding to Line of Duty star Vicky McClure's new series Trigger Point, Disney+'s raunchy new retelling of Pam & Tommy, and Gogglebox staple First Dates.

Gogglebox has replaced 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown in the Friday night 9pm slot on Channel 4. Last week's final episode of the current run featured Sean Lock in a posthumous appearance, with a tribute to him in a title card at the end.

Although it was reported as his last ever episode, Digital Spy confirmed with the broadcaster that he had filmed further episodes before his death.

Gogglebox airs on Channel 4.
