Golden Globes joke about Taylor Swift falls flat with fans. Her reaction goes viral

Comedy is hard. Being funny is hard. Doing it at the Golden Globes ceremony, which notoriously has had problems finding good hosts, is apparently even harder.

So someone could have (should have?) helped out comedian Jo Koy before he hit the stage Sunday and warned him: no Taylor Swift jokes.

Not that she can’t take a joke. It’s just called self-preservation because her army of fans stands ready to defend her against the slightest of slights, real or perceived, and Sunday Koy served up one.

The setup: Swift is dating Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce and has become a recent regular at his games.

”The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL? At the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift,” Koy said in his opening monologue.

Sitting in the audience, Swift did not look amused.

In fact, what’s that saying?

If looks could something-something.

Cameras caught her pursing her lips, glaring and taking a sip of her drink, a reaction that went viral on social media as Swifties took Koy to task.

“It makes me irate that Taylor just tries to simply exist in spaces and is somehow blamed for the attention that others (!!!) place on her,” one fan tweeted on X.

‘Tis true. While some folks have complained about TV cameras showing Swift during the games, the singer, in her Person of the Year interview with Time, said she has no clue how often TV cameras are focused on her.

“I’m just there to support Travis,” Swift said. “I have no awareness of if I’m being shown too much and pissing off a few dads, Brads, and Chads.”

Another truth: A Marist Poll of 1,135 people across the country found 70% believe Swift has had a positive impact on the NFL. That includes 71% of football fans, the survey said.

Just 24% believe Swift’s impact on the NFL is negative, Marist’s study found, while 6% were unsure.

“There’s no ‘bad blood’ between Americans and Taylor Swift. Her favorability rating is at a level that elected officials can only dream of reaching,” Stephanie Calvano, director of data science and technology at the Marist Institute for Public Opinion, said in a news release.

So back to Koy.

“If THE taylor swift ever reacted like this to one of my jokes i would throw my self off a very tall something,” one Swiftie tweeted.

Koy is coming to Kansas City soon to perform at The Midland on March 14.

Should we meet him there and see if he needs a hug?
