The Great Pizza Rip-Off: How High Street Favourites Charge 9 Times What It Costs To Make

Sometimes only a Domino’s will do, but while it may be satisfying for your stomach, your wallet may not be thanking you.

High street takeaway companies are charging pizza-lovers up to nine times what it costs to make the meal, a study has shown.

Knocking up a pizza from scratch at home would cost just £1.50 but a large margherita from Domino’s costs £13.99, researchers found.

And takeaway pizzas also contain almost double the calories of a shop-bought or homemade versions, with a large Papa Johns margherita packing 2,260 calories.

The meal also contains 75g of fat – well over the 30g daily guideline for the average male.

By contrast, the average supermarket frozen pizza only costs shoppers £2.50 and contains around 915 calories, less than half the calories in a large Pizza Hut pizza.

Spokesman Shane Forster said: ‘Everyone loves a tasty pizza and, you can save yourself a great deal of money by making more effort at home to make your own pizza, especially if you are cooking for the whole family.

'Being aware of the calorie and fat content of such takeaway items is also very important to maintain a healthy lifestyle and a balanced diet.’

The pizza restaurant chains said their prices reflect the quality and delivery time of their food.

A spokesman for Domino’s said: 'You may be able to save a few pennies by buying somebody else’s pizza but the huge drawback is that you then have to eat somebody else’s pizza.

‘Every Domino’s pizza is handmade to order with fresh dough, vine-ripened tomatoes and creamy mozzarella; then it’s delivered to your door piping hot in record time.

'Domino’s is number one for a reason. We may not always be the cheapest but we always aim to be the greatest.’

A Pizza Hut spokesman said: 'We are committed to producing a wide range of fresh, high quality food, which can be enjoyed as a fun treat to share with family and friends, as part of a balanced diet.’
