A Missouri groom is in critical condition after being shot by armed robbers during his backyard wedding ceremony.

On June 29, just before 1 a.m., Manuel and Dulce Gonzalez were celebrating their nuptials when two masked gunmen entered the intimate party through the yard of the couple's St. Louis, Mo., home, KSDK-TV and Fox2 reported, citing relatives and police.

“As one of the men was going through peoples’ pockets, the armed man stood behind the victim, a 42-year-old Hispanic man, with the guns pointed at the man,” St. Louis police said in a press release.

According to a GoFundMe page set up for the family, Manuel was then shot in the head and remains in critical condition. The page states the couple’s two young children were also present though it did not specify if the children were injured in any way.

“He’s a good father. A good husband to my sister. He’s a hard worker,” Yaribeth Peña, the bride’s sister, told Fox2. “He’s just an all-around good person that, I don’t know, he didn’t deserve this.”

According to KSDK-TV, Peña believes the gunmen shot her brother-in-law “as he was going for his wallet and maybe they thought he was going for a weapon.”
