Guardians broadcaster talks about his viral call of Tim Anderson-José Ramirez fight

Cleveland Guardians radio voice Tom Hamilton is one of 10 finalists for the 2023 Ford C. Frick Award, which is presented to a broadcaster by the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum.

The winner will be announced in December, and Hamilton’s candidacy may have gotten a boost over the weekend.

Video of Guardians third baseman José Ramirez trading blows with White Sox infielder Tim Anderson on Saturday quickly went viral. Soon after, Hamilton’s call of the brouhaha blew up even more.

The Royals television broadcasters talked about Hamilton during Sunday’s game in Philadelphia. And one fan in Cleveland made a T-shirt with Hamilton’s “Down goes Anderson!” call.

The Athletic’s Zack Meisel spoke with Hamilton on Sunday about the call that has been replayed millions of times.

“I think I’m getting way too much recognition,” Hamilton said.

Hamilton told Meisel how he views his job as a baseball broadcaster.

“We’re not doing anything that is going to change the world or save mankind or save a life,” Hamilton said. “You just try to have fun with it, realizing that this is the entertainment business, even though a lot of people question how entertaining we are.”

Plenty of people found Hamilton entertaining Saturday with the possible exception of Anderson. He hasn’t said anything publicly about the boxing match with Ramirez.

But on Sunday night, Anderson shared eight tweets that ranged from him writing “you know all this happening for a reason …” to “keep kicking on me while I’m down..” to “The Picture Bigger …

Ramirez told reporters after Saturday’s game that Anderson wanted to fight and Ramirez was simply defending himself.
