Gulliver, Doral win Dade All-Sports awards. Columbus, Lourdes, Westminster also recognized

Gulliver Prep in many senses set the standard for athletic success in Miami-Dade County this season. The Raiders had two teams win state titles, another two finish as state runners-up, a fifth advance to the state semifinals and three more make it to the regional finals.

And even without a team state title, it was another successful season for the Doral Academy athletic program with three teams reaching their respective state semifinals, two others advancing to the regional finals and another finishing in fifth place at its state tournament.

As a result, Gulliver and Doral are the Miami Herald’s All-Sports Awards winners for Miami-Dade County for the 2022-2023 athletic season. Doral Academy wins in the Class 7A-5A division, while Gulliver is the winner for the Class 4A-1A division.

Doral had a plethora of teams make deep postseason runs this year. The Firebirds’ softball, baseball and boys’ soccer teams all reached the state semifinals. Football and girls’ volleyball made it to the regional finals.

The girls’ golf team finished fifth at state in Class 3A, while boys’ wrestling finished ninth in Class 3A. And Doral’s girls’ soccer and girls’ tennis teams also advanced to the regional semifinals.

For Gulliver Prep, it won state titles in boys’ soccer and girls’ tennis, while the school’s girls’ water polo and girls’ swimming and diving teams were state runners-up. The Raiders’ baseball team made it to the state semifinals, while the boys’ water polo, boys’ tennis and girls’ volleyball teams each made it to the regional finals.

But they’re not the only ones from the county being recognized this season.

In addition to the overall All-Sports award, the Herald gives out the Boys’ Major Sports Award, which recognizes success across six sports (Football, basketball, soccer, baseball, track and field, and wrestling), and the Girls’ Major Sports Award, which looks at how schools fared across five sports (indoor volleyball, basketball, soccer, track and field, and softball).

For the Class 7A-5A group, Columbus won the Boys’ Major Sports Award and Lourdes won the Girls’ Major Sports Award.

Columbus won state titles in football and basketball. The Explorers’ baseball team also reached the regional finals in Class 7A while their track team finished ninth in Class 4A and wrestling 25th in Class 3A.

Lourdes was the state runner-up in girls’ soccer in Class 6A. The Bobcats’ volleyball team also reached the regional final and their track and field team finished 11th in Class 3A.

In the Class 4A-1A group, Gulliver wins the Boys’ Major Sports Award while Westminster Christian won the Girls’ Major Sports Award.

Westminster Christian’s success came largely from its girls’ volleyball team, which had a perfect season going until its loss in the Class 3A state title game. The Warriors also advanced to the regional finals in girls’ soccer and the regional semifinals in softball. And while beach volleyball doesn’t count toward the Girls’ Major Sports Award, Westminster Christian was state runner-up there, too.
