Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin Bieber’s relationship continues to fascinate and bedevil. From their on-off beginning to public spats and many, many declarations of profuse love, the two really have been together through thick and thin. Justin has lost paternal figures in pastor Carl Lentz and manager Scooter Braun, and suffered partial facial paralysis, while Hailey launched her skin-care line, fended off a feud with Selena Gomez, and was hospitalized for a mini stroke. To say they’ve been tested is an understatement.
After all that, it’s almost hard to remember how it started! Below, the Biebses’ complete relationship timeline.
2009: A preteen Baldwin meets her future husband for the first time when her father, Stephen Baldwin, introduces her to Bieber backstage at the Today show. The two kept it just as awkward as you’d expect from tweens:
2011: Once again Steven Baldwin brings Bieber and his Belieber daughter together—this time on the red carpet at the premiere of Bieber’s movie Never Say Never. The pair smiled (ever so slightly) for the cameras. That same year Bieber confirmed his budding relationship with Selena Gomez.

A relationship that, for the record, Hailey was all for as a fan.
2014: By 2014, Bieber and Gomez were broken up. Baldwin, meanwhile, strikes up a close friendship with Kendall Jenner, who also happens to be friends with Bieber, and the three are spotted at the Hillsong Church in NYC that November.
A month later, though, Baldwin shut down any dating rumors, telling E! News, “I’ve known him since I was so young—since I was like 13—and we’ve just been good friends over the years. We have just stayed close and there’s nothing more to it than that.”
2015: On New Year’s Day, Bieber posts an Instagram video featuring a cameo from Baldwin. But once again Hailey denies dating rumors. She tells E! News, “He’s just going through a time in his life where he’s transitioning in a really positive way and he needs good people around him. And I’m trying to be a good friend and be there for him and support him.”
But wait, there’s more: In December of 2015, Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin ring in the New Year together yet again. This time in Anguilla.
2016: Finally, in January of 2016, Baldwin and Bieber reveal they’re an item when Bieber shares a a snapshot of the two kissing on Instagram. However, both Baldwin and Bieber tell the press the relationship is a low-key one.
“We are not an exclusive couple,” Baldwin tells E! News. “He’s about to go on tour. Relationships at this age are already complicated, but I don’t really like to talk about it because it’s between me and him.”
Bieber, meanwhile, tells GQ that Baldwin is someone he “really loves” but he’s too busy for a relationship. “I already have a lot that I have to commit to. A lot of responsibilities,” he said. “I don’t want to feel like the girl I love is an added responsibility.”
2016–2018: Just six months after Bieber posted that picture of himself kissing Baldwin, they break up, and he is on to a new girlfriend, Sofia Richie. Baldwin and Bieber unfollow each other on social media and are not photographed together—even in a group setting—for quite some time. During this time apart, Bieber also rekindles his romance with Gomez, before the two called it quits in March of 2018.
May–June 2018: Somehow, some way, the two come back together. "We went through a long period of time when we weren’t friends. We didn’t speak for quite some time, and there was a lot of weirdness that went on. We’ve moved past that," Baldwin tells The Times of London. On June 17 fans photograph Baldwin and Bieber smooching up a storm in Brooklyn. It was, Hailey later revealed, her appearance on The Tonight Show in which she opened a bottle with her teeth that prompted the two to get back in touch.
July 2018: On July 1 they are spotted kissing again in public in New York City. A few days later they”s in the Hamptons when their car breaks down.
Then, on July 7, it’s reported that Bieber had proposed in the Bahamas. “It’s kind of a surprise, but kind of not. Justin has been extremely happy these past few weeks,” a source told People. “He has known Hailey for a long time. This might seem sudden, but they know each other very well.”
Just two days after that, they confirm on social media: “Listen plain and simple Hailey I am soooo in love with everything about you! So committed to spending my life getting to know every single part of you loving you patiently and kindLY. I promise to lead our family with honor and integrity letting Jesus through his Holy Spirit guide us in everything we do and every decision we make.”
September 2018
The couple get married in a secret ceremony at a New York City courthouse. “The city hall marriage was her idea. It was ‘you and me against the world,’” a source said at the time. “Let’s show [everyone] we're serious and it’s not just some crazy fling.”
November 2018
While rumors continue that the newlyweds would eventually have a religious wedding ceremony and celebration with family and friends, they make the marriage Instagram official when Bieber refers to her as “my wife” in a caption. Baldwin changes her profile name to “Hailey Bieber.”
February 2019
Bieber and Bieber are Vogue’s March cover story, and they give fans some insight into their relationship, including the fact that they waited until marriage to have sex. “When I saw her last June, I just forgot how much I loved her and how much I missed her and how much of a positive impact she made on my life,” Bieber told the magazine. “I was like, ’Holy cow, this is what I’ve been looking for.’”

After an Us Weekly story hints at “trust issues” with the couple, Baldwin responds on her Instagram Stories with “Don’t believe what ya read on the Internet folks.”
But then Bieber opened up about the fact that he’s battling some issues. “Just wanted to keep you guys updated a little bit hopefully what I’m going through will resonate with you guys,” he wrote on Instagram on March 10. “Been struggling a lot. Just feeling super disconnected and weird. I always bounce back so I’m not worried just wanted to reach out and ask for your guys to pray for me. God is faithful and ur prayers really work thanks... the most human season I’ve ever been in facing my stuff head on.”
On March 25 he addressed whether or not he’d be making a new album anytime soon: It’s a no—for now. “I have been looking, seeking, trial and error as most of us do, I am now very focused on repairing some of the deep rooted issues that I have as most of us have, so that I don’t fall apart, so that I can sustain my marriage and be the father I want to be,” he wrote. “Music is very important to me but Nothing comes before my family and my health. I will come with a kick ass album ASAP, my swag is undeniable and my drive is indescribable his love is supernatural his grace is that reliable.”
Bieber also took to the comments section to defend his wife and their relationship after someone said he married Hailey only to get back at his ex Selena Gomez. “Why would I dedicate my whole life to someone in marriage to get back and [sic] my ex,” he wrote. “I absolutely loved and love Selena she will always hold a place in my heart,” he continued. “But I am head over heels with my life and she is absolutely the BEST THING that has ever happened to me period.”
April 2019
Justin reveals that Hailey is pregnant, then that it was a joke for April Fool’s Day, then apologizes if he offended anyone struggling with infertility. Ah, little do the Biebers know, pregnancy rumors will be causing problems for ages!
September 2019
Time for the big, fun wedding! Hailey and best friend Kendall Jenner kick off the celebrations with a feisty bachelorette party in Los Angeles. The bride-to-be (technically already married) wore a dress that cost just $57.

Hailey addresses the negativity she gets online, writing on Instagram, “NEWS FLASH: it hurts to be torn apart on the internet!!! It hurts to be compared to other human beings every single day, it hurts for people to jump to conclusions and make assumptions. It hurts to be called names, and to feel like you don’t measure up to a certain standard... the list goes on and on…it’s important to be honest about how these things affect us mentally and emotionally. Hopefully, it speaks to someone struggling with the same. With that being said Happy New Year. Let’s connect more in 2020.” And then COVID hit and everyone realized petty celeb drama wasn't important and dropped it forever.

For reasons that are honestly too stupid to get into (it has to do with…lip-synching a Drake song?), people are convinced that Hailey is “shading” her husband’s ex Selena Gomez. Amid the ~drama~ Hailey decides to delete her Twitter account, though she will soon pivot to TikTok, which will prove nearly fatal. Ah well, hindsight!
October 2020
Ink, like love, is forever. To celebrate their second wedding anniversary, the model gets some very meaningful ink. Celebrity tattoo artist Mr. K. posted some images of his latest work on Instagram, which includes the letter J on Hailey’s left ring finger.
The same month Hailey opens up to Vogue Italia about life in the spotlight, saying, “It was difficult for me to understand how to carry on a relationship like this, experienced under the eyes of all. But there comes a time when you have to embrace reality and admit who you are. For a long time I couldn’t do it: I didn’t kiss him in public, I didn’t like the idea of people watching us at certain moments. But I realized that it is a battle that, in the long run, instead of protecting you, exhausts you. The fact is, we love each other. And there is really nothing to hide.” Also, their cover shoot is, like, really good.
November 2020
Justin breaks up with the other big love of his life: Hillsong. Reports speculate that the pop star and pastor Carl Lentz may have had a falling-out as early as 2018, but when they unfollow each other on Instagram (around the time Lentz was exposed as a cheater), the split becomes official, and permanent. Hailey unfollows Lentz too.
December 2020
Given how vocal they have been about waiting for marriage to have sex, many are surprised that the couple make an extremely raunchy joke online. But you do you, Biebses!
January 2021
The “Baby” singer drops an “On the Road” video for his song “Anyone” that stars his wife. The three-minute black-and-white clip shows the couple kissing and cuddling in bed, kissing and cuddling on a countertop, zipping around via boat, and hanging out in a very enviable jacuzzi. (The official video is about Biebs as an old-timey boxer and costars Zoey Deutch, FYI.)
July 2021
After footage seems to show a heated confrontation between the couple, Hailey refutes the narrative that Justin was “screaming” at her, posting a kissy pic to Instagram and writing, “Reminiscing on how amazing last weekend was. Had the best time surrounded by so much love…Any other narrative floating around is beyond false. Don’t feed into the negative bullshit peeps.”
September 2021
The Biebers attend the 2021 Met Gala, their first time walking the event’s red carpet as a couple. Hailey wears a Saint Laurent gown and a Tiffany & Co. necklace, while Justin wears a dramatically oversized suit by La Maison Drew, an offshoot of his Drew House clothing line.
A few days after the event, Hailey opens up to Alex Cooper on the Call Her Daddy podcast about dealing with Selena Gomez fans who heckled the couple on the carpet.
“I could hear everyone screaming and again I think there’s a certain part of you that has a numbness [to it]. I was really surprised,” she tells Cooper of her experience at the Met.
In the same interview, she addresses the yearslong speculation that Justin was still in a relationship with his ex when he and Hailey got together. “I can say, period, point blank, I was never with him when he was in a relationship with anybody—that’s the end of it,” she says of the pair’s relationship timeline.

Justin stirs up pregnancy talk when he says 2021 is the year the couple will start “trying,” even though Hailey’s already had to deal with these rumors for years.
November 2021
After usually denying reports of tension and other issues, Hailey admits that she did previously reach a “breaking point” in her relationship with Justin. “I remember I called [my mom] a few different times, one particular time [when] we were in Brooklyn and I was calling her, crying, and I was like, ‘I just can’t do it,’” the model says in an episode of the In Good Faith With Chelsea & Judah Smith podcast. “But I also just think I was in it. I made a decision. I know for a fact that I’ve loved this person for a very long time and now would not be the time to give up on him. I just wouldn’t do that to him.
“Imagine abandoning somebody in the middle of the worst time of their life, potentially,” Hailey says. “It was really hard…. There were days where I literally was like, ‘I don’t know if he’s going to be okay.’ Something really deep down inside of me was like, ‘He’s going to be through it.’ I just didn’t know how long it was going to take.”
On her birthday Justin writes a super-dramatic Instagram post as a tribute to his wife. The gushy caption accompanies a handful of selfies of the pair.
March 2022
Hailey is rushed to the hospital after suffering a “mini stroke” due to a blood clot in her brain. Thankfully, her body was able to process the clot on its own and she fully recovered. “Although this was definitely one of the scariest moments I’ve ever been through, I’m home now and doing well and I’m so grateful and thankful to all the amazing doctors and nurses that took care of me! Thank you to everyone who has reached out with well wishes and concern and for the support and love," the model shares.
At a concert a week later, Justin reflects on Hailey’s health scare, telling his audience, “She’s okay, she’s good, she’s strong. But it’s been scary, you know, like, it’s been really scary. But I know for a fact that God has her in the palms of his hands, and that’s a good thing.”
April 2022
The couple attend the 2022 Grammy Awards, where Justin is performing. After sharing photos of her look on social media, Hailey once again confronts rumors that she’s expecting. “I’m not pregnant leave me alone,” she writes in a comment on an Instagram post speculating about her “baby bump,” per Harper’s Bazaar.

Justin cancels upcoming tour dates and reveals that he’s suffering partial facial paralysis due to Ramsay Hunt syndrome, telling followers, “Obviously, as you can probably see from my face, I have this syndrome called Ramsay Hunt syndrome and it is from this virus that attacks the nerve in my ear, my facial nerves, and has caused my face to have paralysis.”

During a much-hyped podcast chat, Hailey tells the story of how she and Justin got together. The true story. Not the one Selena fans made up. “When he and I started hooking up, or anything of that sort, he was not in any relationship,” she said. “It’s not my character to mess with someone’s relationship. I was raised better than that.”
She continued, “I understand how it looks from the outside, but that was a situation where I know for a fact that it was the right thing for them to close that door, but of course, there’s a very long history there and I respect that a lot. I don’t want to talk on either one of their behalves.”

After the rapper Ye makes fun of the model’s (alleged) nose job and finds other ways to involve the couple in his, let’s say, downward spiral, Hailey calls out his hypocrisy in claiming to be a Christian while promoting hatred and antisemitism, writing on Instagram, “You cannot believe in God and be anti-Semitic. You cannot love God and support or condone hate speech. To love God is to love people. ALL people.”
Hailey also chooses love by taking a picture with Selena Gomez, clearly an attempt to squash the ongoing war between their respective fandoms. It’s a “feud” Justin himself has basically stayed silent on, leading some to wonder why he isn’t defending his wife. Probably because he knows any comment from him will only fan the flames. This picture works for…a little while!
On Halloween, the couple reveal they’ve adopted a second Yorkie.

Hails can’t catch a break! She reveals that she had an ovarian cyst “the size of an apple,” and that she’s dealt with the issue before. Her tone implies that it’s a benign, though uncomfortable, condition, and definitely not a baby.
