HBO will let everyone stream its most popular TV shows for free, starting right now
Already scrolled aimlessly through Netflix a few times? Over everything that’s on Hulu? Well, now there’s another option for your social-distancing entertainment. Many of HBO’s popular TV shows, as well as several movies and documentaries, will be available for free starting today, Friday, April 3rd.
The great thing about the shows that HBO is offering is that they’re classics that are very marathon-able. For instance, there’s The Sopranos, The Wire, Veep, and True Blood—all of which provide five-plus seasons to get through. Unfortunately, neither Game of Thrones nor Girls is available for free, but we think we can make do.
On the movies side of things, there are releases from the past year, like Pokémon Detective Pikachu and Blinded by the Light, as well as older releases, like the very re-watchable Crazy, Stupid, Love. There are also some documentaries, including much-talked-about, recently-released ones like The Inventor and McMillions. And if you need something to watch with kids, HBO has plenty of kids movies available, as you’ll see below.
Obviously, if you already subscribe to HBO Go or HBO Now, this news isn’t so exciting for you. Just carry on watching as usual. But if you don’t subscribe, you will now be able to stream TV series and movies for a limited time by downloading the HBO Go or HBO Now app, or by heading to HBOGo.com or HBONow.com. On the site, you’ll see a section that says “Stream for Free: No Subscription Required.” Your streaming world just got a little bit bigger.
