Heavy traffic expected this week as Tacoma gears up for July 4. Here’s where to avoid

Traffic in Tacoma’s North End could get congested thanks to this week’s Fourth of July festivities.

Street closures and parking limitations are in the forecast on Wednesday and Thursday, Metro Parks announced in a news release. Tacoma will soon kick off the July 4 Summer Blast celebration at Dune Peninsula, 5361 Yacht Club Road, and Cummings Park, 3939 Ruston Way.

On Wednesday, workers and vendors will be getting ready for the event, meaning that the gated lots at Cummings, Dune Peninsula, Jack Tanner and Les Davis parks will be off limits, according to Metro Parks. Drivers can park at Point Ruston and the lots near Duke’s Seafood and Katie Downs Waterfront Tavern.

On Thursday, Ruston Way will be closed to commuters between North 49th and Alder streets, according to Metro Parks. So will Yacht Club Road between Grand Loop and Ruston Way, as well as North Baltimore Street between North 49th Street and Ruston Way.

Delays and slower traffic are likely because of those closures, which will last from 7 a.m. to midnight, according to Metro Parks.
