How to Help Victims of Hurricane Beryl

Texas is reeling after Hurricane Beryl made landfall.

The deadly storm, which tore through parts of the Caribbean before making its way through Louisiana and Texas on Monday, July 8, has left a trail of destruction in its wake.

As of Tuesday, July 9, the storm, which made landfall in the United States as a category 1 hurricane, has killed at least seven people, according to The Houston Chronicle, citing Harris County Officials. An additional death in Louisiana was reported by the Bossier Parish Sheriff's Office.

Currently, there are over 2 million people in Texas without power, according to PowerOutage.us  — and officials have warned that outages could last for days. Additionally, the storm, which has been downgraded to a tropical depression as it continues its path across the country, flooded highways, bayous, streets and homes throughout Houston.

Now, residents are looking to pick up the pieces in the storm's aftermath as additional concerns regarding the lack of power amid the summer heat and a shortage of food plague the city.

For ways you can help in relief efforts, here are a collection of organizations working to bring aid and recovery to the region.

American Red Cross
Donate by visiting redcross.org, calling 1-800-RED-Cross (800-733-2767) or texting REDCROSS to 90999. Checks bearing “Hurricane Beryl” in the memo line (along with a completed donation form) can also be sent to Red Cross chapters.

Salvation Army
Visit helpsalvationarmy.org to fill out a donation form and check the option for Hurricane Beryl. One-hundred percent of the donation will go to relief efforts. You can also call 1-800-SAL-ARMY.

Houston Food Bank
Food and monetary donations are accepted, and the organization is looking for volunteers. According to the Houston Chronicle, for each $1 donated, three meals will be provided due to the food bank’s alliance with 1,600 partners in the area.

Memorial Assistance Ministries
The organization’s Disaster Relief and Recovery Fund helps families receive assistance for needs including gas, clothes and rent assistance. Donate here.
