High school football previews for second-round playoff games in the Rock Hill region

Teams continue their run toward a state championship following their second-round matchups.

Old rivals will face off at each other, while other programs are just looking to extend their season another week against a tough opponent. All games are scheduled for kickoff on Friday night at 7:30.

Greenwood (6-5) at Northwestern (10-1)

Northwestern heads into this second-round matchup following a 57-point shutout of Laurens last week, while Greenwood is coming in following a 17-16 comeback win over North Augusta after going on a 10-0 run to close out the game in the fourth quarter. This is the second consecutive second-round meetup for these two schools: Northwestern won last year’s contest, 50-0. These two schools also met in the 2010 SCHSL Class 4A Division II state championship game, a game Northwestern won 42-10.

South Pointe (8-3) at Midland Valley (11-0)

South Pointe beat Eastside 49-7 last week and will go on the road to face a Midland Valley team coming off a 28-21 victory over Easley. Midland Valley has the state’s top rusher in Traevon Dunbar (2,187 yards, 28 touchdowns), while South Pointe has two players ranked top five in the state in sacks (C.J. Dixon is first with 20.5; Aakil Brown is fifth with 12.0).

Gaffney (8-3) at Clover (9-2)

Clover heads into this contest following a 31-14 victory over Woodmont last week, while Gaffney beat Lexington, 47-14. The Blue Eagles have the state’s third leading rusher in Landon Stone (1903 yards, 13 touchdowns), while Gaffney’s Andrew Ruppe leads the state in interceptions with 11. Clover has lost each of its past seven matchups against Gaffney and has not beat the Indians since 2008.

York (8-3) at Westside (10-1)

York secured a 26-17 comeback victory over Riverside last week, while Westside blanked Airport by 49 points in its opening-round playoff game. York will be facing a familiar foe: First-year Westside head coach Brian Lane was the head coach at rival Clover for the previous six seasons.

Lancaster (2-9) at Lucy Beckham (9-1)

Playing in the lower-state side of the bracket, Lancaster went on the road and upset Ridge View 26-14 last week and will travel to Mount Pleasant to face a Lucy Beckham team coming off a 37-7 victory over West Florence. This will be the fourth consecutive road game for the Bruins.

Chester (9-2) at Chapman (10-1)

Chester pulled away to beat Powdersville 52-34 last week and will travel west to face a Chapman team riding an eight-game win streak after last week’s 45-point shutout win over Crescent. These two teams met in the second round of the playoffs two years ago, with Chester pulling out a 33-28 victory.

Kingstree (5-6) at Andrew Jackson (8-3)

Andrew Jackson currently rides a six-game win streak after a 58-16 victory over Ridgeland-Hardeeville last week, and will welcome a Kingstree team that earned a 14-12 upset road victory over Timberland. These two teams haven’t met since 2004, with the Volunteers taking a 14-12 victory over the Blazers.

St. Joseph’s Catholic (9-2) at Lewisville (10-1)

Lewisville secured a 52-point shutout over Calhoun Falls Charter last week and will look to win its 11th consecutive contest when it welcomes a St. Joseph’s Catholic team coming off a 38-24 victory over Hunter-Kinard-Tyler. The Lions have outscored their opponents 505-13 during the win streak.
