High school football rankings: Patterson wins Week 1 Top 10 matchup, 3 schools move up
Troy Leota and the Central Catholic offensive line carved out paths for for Joey Alcutt, Carter Meeks and five other rushers to explode for 388 yards. Alcutt and quarterback TP Wentworth finished with a pair of rushing touchdowns and Trace Hernandez added another as the Raiders ran through Merced in their season opener, winning 42-12. The Stanislaus District’s top team takes on St. Mary’s in Stockton in the Holy Bowl on Friday night, looking to avenge last season’s blowout loss.
There is no shame for Turlock in losing to one of the section’s best teams. They did not drop despite losing on the road to a tough Rocklin team, which is ranked in the top 5 in the Sacramento-area by The Sacramento Bee. To avoid starting the season 0-2, the Bulldogs play their home opener Friday night against Clovis West. The Eagles also are looking for their first win after losing to St. Mary’s.

Patterson jumps Escalon this week after a dominant win in a Top 10 matchup with Hilmar. The Tigers forced four turnovers and scored 31 second-quarter points. Max Medina tossed four touchdown passes and Coby Joseph rushed for 154 yards in a 45-20 win. As a result of the loss, Hilmar dropped one spot. Oakdale replaced the Yellowjackets as the area’s new No. 7 team after a narrow win over Sonora.
Downey moved from No. 5 to No. 4 after Carson Lamb, Ethan Woodmansee and Joseph Ramirez led the Knights’ offense in a 50-point outburst against Lincoln-Stockton. Defensively, Derrick Kirkendall dominated on the defensive line with 11 tackles, five tackles for loss and three sacks. Noah Cruz came away with an interception.
