High schools: Clovis wins NorCal regional boys water polo title in Stockton

The California Interscholastic Federation Northern California Division III regional plaque came home with the Clovis High boys water polo team.

The Cougars defeated Garces 12-4 at the University of the Pacific in Stockton on Saturday afternoon.

“The big difference for us is our defense came out and just settled,” Clovis coach Steven Kaufmann said. “Settled down their offensive attack and kind of forced them to go to their secondary and tertiary options.”

Kaufmann credited Alexander Minton, who led the team with six goals, and Malachi Marsh with “fantastic games.”

The Cougars lost to Buchanan 11-5 in the Central Section Division I semifinals, but winning the NorCal regional title was a nice send-off for his team.

Clovis finishes the season 20-14.

“We are a very young team, starting three sophomores and two freshmen,” Kaufmann said. “A lot of people counted us out all year. These kids have big hearts and they work hard and they want to win. They wanted it and they battled.”
