Highland Farmers Market moves inside as cooling shelters open across Madison County

Highland is taking extra precautions as the summer heat engulfs the region.

Cooling shelters opened Monday in the Weinheimer Community Center at 1100 Main St., open until 5 p.m. on a regular basis but kept open to 7 p.m. on Tuesday due to the heat.

The Louis Latzer Public Library at 1001 9th St. also serves as a cooling center 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday through Thursday.

Highland’s Thursday farmer’s market was moved indoors on Tuesday due to the extreme temperatures.

The market takes place 4-7 p.m., but this time it was in the Weinheimer Community Center. Vendors included Wooden Spool Market, M & M Dog Co., Main Street Pastries, Nina’s Beading, AIA Handmade USA, Candle Cottage, KC Karen’s Creations, Mealtime Memories Bakery, My Green Backyard and The Chocolate Affair.

Near Highland, cooling centers are open in the Madison County Administration Building at 157 N. Main in Edwardsville from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; the community room at the Glen Carbon Police Department at 149 N. Main in Glen Carbon from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.; the Glen Carbon Centennial Library at 198 S. Main in Glen Carbon from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturdays; the Keasler Recreation Complex at 615 3rd St. in East Alton open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and the East Alton Ice Arena at 631 Lewis & Clark Blvd. 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The United Way of Missouri and Southwestern Illinois has compiled a list of local cooling sites for the 2024 summer.
