Hiker rescued near Nain, taken to hospital for medical treatment

RCMP in Nain say a Quebec man was rescued Thursday, after spending a long day and night in the wilderness.

The man, 49, was hiking from Quebec to Nain, Labrador, when he activated his emergency beacon early Wednesday afternoon.

Police said at that time the hiker was approximately 25 kilometres west of Nain.

He pressed his emergency beacon after finding that he was mildly hypothermic and couldn't carry on.

Fire and Emergency Services NL dispatched air support to the man, but initial search and rescue efforts were impeded by poor weather and difficult terrain.

The hiker was in a mountainous area, which made rescue challenging for the chopper.

With additional support from the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre and a Cormorant helicopter, rescuers were eventually able to locate the man at 7 a.m. Thursday.

He was safely removed from the area with no injuries and transported to Happy Valley-Goose Bay for medical treatment.
