Hinds brothers sentenced to 1 year behind bars for brutal Saskatoon beating caught on video

Two brothers from Sherwood Park, Alta., have been sentenced to one year in jail for a brutal beating caught on video in Saskatoon.

Darcy Hinds, 25, and Darren Hinds, 28, pleaded guilty to one count each of aggravated assault, and one count each of aggravated assault causing bodily harm, at Saskatoon Provincial Court on Wednesday.

They will both serve one year behind bars for the aggravated assault charge, and six months concurrently for the bodily harm charges.

Darren Hinds also faced a charge of uttering threats to cause death, but that charge was stayed. The one-year sentence was suggested in a joint submission from the Crown and the defence.

The charges date back to December 2015. Police said the incident happened Nov. 28, 2015. and the two male victims, ages 32 and 43, were seriously injured.

A video of the beating posted on YouTube was watched by thousands of people. It shows two large men repeatedly punch and kick two other men outside of a cold beer and wine store on Central Avenue.

A video of the crime was also played in court today, before the one-year sentence was handed down.

Both the Crown and defence requested the same jail time in a joint submission, with defence lawyer Brian Pfefferle saying the brothers had "essentially taken responsibility" for the crime since the video went public.

The judge said the seriousness of the assault should have warranted a longer sentence, but the joint submission was adopted after the brothers pleaded guilty.

Speaking after the pair were sentenced and taken away in handcuffs by security, Pfefferle said the brothers had "manned up" and "owned up" to the assault.
