Historic Chick Webb Recreational Center to undergo refurbishment

Groundbreaking began Wednesday on improvements to the Chick Webb Recreational Center in east Baltimore. It's a $21 million project expected to give the historic building a 21st century makeover. The rec center was built in 1947. It was the first community center and pool for Black people in what was a segregated east Baltimore. It is named after renowned drummer Chick Webb. In 2017, it was designated a city landmark.
