Hollyoaks star Stephanie Davis has opened up about suffering a tragic miscarriage.

The Sinead O'Connor actress made the heartbreaking announcement in an Instagram post yesterday (July 30), featuring photos of herself alongside boyfriend Joe Mckalroy, cradling her baby bump and showing her positive pregnancy test.

"So as my beautiful followers, a lot of you had asked if I was pregnant a while back," she wrote. "Well you were right, we were having a baby! I was pregnant. We found out from so so early on it felt like we were pregnant for so long."

Davis went on to explain that she was nearly 12 weeks pregnant and had experienced severe sickness from early during the pregnancy, but woke one morning feeling something was different.

"I started getting really bad headaches one night and the next morning I woke up and I said to Joe and my mum and Joe's mum that I didn’t feel pregnant anymore...

"The anxiety, the heartbreak and the sadness we have gone through was horrendous. Me and Joe were so excited and already had visioned and planned a life with our family of 4. I was already looking at what I was doing for my baby shower. You think when you get further on like I was that everything will be ok, so it was a big shock. When they told us there was no heartbeat and the baby had stopped growing [it] was just so upsetting."

She continued by saying that she had to have an operation to remove the baby due to being further along in the pregnancy, before adding that the support of her family and management has helped significantly.

"After the operation I was so numb and empty and my hormones were all over the place. It was hard to accept there was nothing there anymore and our journey we were on was over. Joe was my rock and I love you more every day. We are ok and we have got through it all as [a] family. One day we will expand our little family when the time is right."

Former co-star Rachel Adedeji, fellow Hollyoaks alumni Kelly-Marie Stewart, and Desperate Scousewives' Amanda Harrington sent messages of love and support in the comments, as did numerous fans.

The actress explained in a subsequent Instagram Story that the miscarriage was a while ago and it took time for her to be ready to speak about it. She thanked everyone for their messages and explained that she is staying positive and focusing on getting her health in the best condition.
